Council to consult over options for public toilets

27 October 2017

Bridgend County Borough Council is set to ask residents, businesses, disability groups and town and community councils for their views on how public toilets could be provided in the future.

The council currently provides six public toilets - one in Maesteg, two in Bridgend and three in Porthcawl – but needs to make potential savings of up to £150,000 by 2018-19.

A number of options are being considered, including the use of community asset transfers to enable more public toilets to be managed by town and community councils and other organisations.

The process is already in use elsewhere in areas such as Pencoed, where the town council has taken on the day-to-day management of the local toilets.

Other options that will be discussed include the potential installation of more pay-as-you-use toilets in the county borough, or encouraging more businesses to make their facilities available to the public as part of the council’s comfort scheme.

Councillor Richard Young, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “We will look at all available options for ensuring that public toilet facilities can continue to be provided in Bridgend County Borough, despite the ongoing cuts in the amount of funding that the council receives to provide services.

“We will be announcing details of the consultation soon, and I hope that as many people will take part as possible.”
