Business Rates is a local tax that is paid by the occupiers of all non-domestic/business properties such as shops, offices, pubs, warehouses and factories. Each year a business rates bill is sent to the ratepayer/owner.
If a property is used for both domestic and non-domestic purposes such as a public house with a flat above, business rates is payable on the non-domestic part and council tax is payable on the domestic part. This type of property is known as a composite property.
The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) sets the rateable value of each business premises by using various criteria such as the rental information. The multiplier is set by the Welsh Government each year. Both these figures are used to calculate the rates payable.
The Council collects the Business Rates on behalf of the Welsh Government who redistribute them to local authorities across Wales to pay for services.
The multiplier for 2016/17 is 0.486
